In celebration of American Indian and Indigenous Heritage Month, the Virginia Tech community welcomes tribal leaders, members and Chief Dean Branham of the Monacan Nation.

As part of the festivities, Rufus Elliott, the first Monacan to attend and graduate from Virginia Tech will share an honor song, youth members of the Monacan Nation will perform traditional dance, and Karenne Wood, director of the VFH’s Virginia Indian Program, will provide a summary of Monacan history.

The land on which Virginia Tech is located was originally under the stewardship of the Tutelo and Monacan Nations, making the gathering especially meaningful.
