VFH Board member Walter Rugaber was born in Georgia and was the publisher of The Roanoke Times for twenty years.
Walter’s term on the VFH Board of Directors came to a close this month, but before he left, he sat down with Elliot Majerczyk in our radio studio to talk about VFH’s Folklife Program and the role of the humanities in our lives.
[The humanities] remind us that we’re part of a civilized society.
They teach us to communicate with each other at a time when our need to communicate is perhaps more critical than it has ever been before.
If you are involved with the humanities you know that there are all sorts of different points of view… and you have to learn to accept that about other people.
Walter Rugaber has been a newspaper reporter, editor, and was the publisher of the Roanoke Times. He now lives in southwest Virginia.
