VFH Board member Barbara Fried was born in Brooklyn and attended law school at the University of Chicago.

Barbara originally came to VFH as a grant applicant. She recently sat down with Elliot Majerczyk in our radio studio to talk about that grant project and what the word “humanities” means to her.

The humanities are how we record and document the experiences we have.

The humanities range from food to poetry to religion to art.. I think it’s a much broader definition today than it has been in the past.

I first came [to VFH] as a supplicant for a grant for an African American church, Laurel Grove.

Barbara Fried has been Chairman of the Fried Companies, Inc., a real estate development and management company based in Springfield, Virginia, since 1995. Barbara originally came to VFH as a grant applicant; she has served on the Board a total of four terms and begins in summer 2014 as Board Chair.

Our work brings people together and honors our shared humanity.
