Horace Scruggs is a skilled outdoorsman in Fluvanna County. He is working with our Virginia Folklife Program to pass along his skills in navigating the river to apprentices Hanna Scruggs (Horace’s daughter) and Niya Bates.
As part of the apprenticeship, Horace is making a documentary film about their experiences.
“What we hope for the project is to draw people to outdoor spaces, to enjoy them. But especially for African Americans to rediscover and reclaim those spaces.”
