“When Native people read history in a history book, it’s not what we would say about ourselves.”
Chief Lynette Allston
In November, our Encyclopedia Virginia (EV) published a new entry on the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia. One of eleven state-recognized tribes in Virginia, the Nottoway people first appear in the written record in 1650, when merchant and colonist Edward Bland encountered two Nottoway towns on the Nottoway River.
We talked to Chief Lynette Allston about what the Nottoway tribe looks like today and what it meant to be part of the group of tribal members who created the new EV entry.
