2024 Annual Book Arts Members’ Meeting & Potluck at the Virginia Center for the Book

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone on Sunday, January 28, 2024, for our Annual Members’ Meeting. We invite our Book Arts members, friends, and all those curious about our Center’s offerings to attend. As per usual the afternoon’s event will include a brief business meeting, a pot-luck lunch, and consideration of the 2024 Members’ Project.

2023 Holiday Card Workshop

Join us for an introduction to letterpress as you make 15 simple holiday greeting cards from our movable type. Come with an idea for no more than 20 words, look through our dingbats, or select a preprinted image to create your design. You’ll experience the basics of type composition, get help printing on the press, and leave with the cards you can put to immediate use.

Hinged Lid Box Construction w/Jane Freeman

Using book board, decorative paper, and book cloth, participants will learn basic box construction and make a 5 x 7 hinged lid box.  This durable and sturdy construction both sits on its base and stands upright on a bookshelf; it is perfect for housing mementos, jewelry, ephemera, and more.  Participants will explore options for decorating the box and learn how to calculate measurements to make custom size boxes.

Thinking of Place iii An Exhibition of 80 Printmakers

Thinking of Place iii is a traveling exhibition showing the work of 80 printmakers who were inspired by themes of space and place. Akemi Ohira, Associate Professor of Printmaking, is hosting and curating this stop on the exhibition’s world tour. Exhibition dates: Ruffin Gallery – October 27 through December 15, 2023.

Held at the Maier Museum, the 32nd Annual Helen Clark Berlind Symposium is a day-long program inspired by the 112th Annual Exhibition – Back to Front: Artists’ Books by Women which presents the expansive concept of the book as art, in an array of formats and materials.

Rivanna Reconnaissance: 2023 Member’s Project Work Day

We’re going to gather again at the Virginia Center for the Book to check out physical prototypes for those who still need to get one in, hear about progress for those already in production with printing their signatures, and help troubleshoot getting our signatures printed.
