Join us for the unveiling of a new exhibit honoring the life, work, and legacy of beloved Lucy F. Simms and Waterman Elementary school teacher and community leader Mary Awkard Fairfax.

The event will be opened by Mayor Deanna Reed, and will be followed by a discussion of the new exhibit and a sharing of memories and stories about Mrs. Fairfax from those who knew her.

Supported by Harrisonburg City, Virginia Humanities, and JMU’s AAAD Studies Center and College of Arts and Letters, the exhibit is located in the conference room of the Lucy F. Simms Continuing Education Center, the very room where Mrs. Fairfax taught for decades. You can visit the exhibit daily starting February 14, Monday to Friday, 8-5pm.

Our work brings people together and honors our shared humanity.
