Wilderness Road Museum, Virginia Tech, and the Pulaski County VA250 committee are excited to announce a VA250 Virginia Humanities Grant sponsoring free summer field trips for 4th and 5th grade students in the New River Valley in 2024!

Students will explore the American Revolution through Appalachian stories and historical sites. Through experiential activities aligning with Virginia’s 4th and 5th grade social sciences curriculum, students will learn about the region’s past and how people in eighteenth-century Appalachia thought about land, conflict, and migration.

Students will spend a total of five days visiting historic sites in the area including William Preston’s Smithfield, Abingdon Muster Grounds, Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, Historic Crab Orchard Museum and Pioneer Park, Inc., Wilderness Road Regional Museum, and the New River Trail State Park. Entries in an art and essay contest will be used in a traveling exhibit at Virginia Tech.

Our work brings people together and honors our shared humanity.
