Join Deborah Wilkinson, a citizen of the Upper Mattaponi Indian Tribe, for a hands-on workshop exploring traditional Indigenous craft practices. Participants will learn the design and preparation of gourd shards, transforming them into painted pieces and handcrafted necklaces while engaging with the cultural knowledge behind these techniques.
This interactive workshop invites participants to learn by doing, emphasizing Indigenous artistic traditions, material culture, and community-based knowledge passed down across generations.
This workshop is part of “Indigenous Democratic Traditions: Before America’s 250th & Beyond,” presented by the UVA Karsh Institute of Democracy’s John L. Nau III History and Principles of Democracy Lab.
This program was supported in part by a Virginia Humanities grant.
